Shed-find chairs reach £11,000 at Fasque sale

A PAIR of moth-eaten chairs proved one of the highlights when Taylor’s Auction Rooms in Montrose hosted a sale of items from Fasque House, once the Fettercairn home of Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.

The furniture included a pair of William IV library mahogany armchairs with reeded supports discovered in one of the sheds at Fasque, eventually bought by a local collector for an unexpected £11,400.

A George III-style cast iron fire grate from the Fasque dining room sold for £2600 and a William IV mahogany extending dining table was sold for £3300.

Garden furniture included a pair of 19th century cast iron garden urns bought for £1200 and a sundial by Thomas Jones and Sons, who worked in Charing Cross, London, in the 1820s and 1830s, was purchased by another local customer for £5000.

A painting sale saw interest from across the country including a watercolour by Arbroath artist James Watterston Herald of Children Returning from School which realised £5500. A watercolour by Birmingham-born artist James T. Watts went to a phone bid of £8500.
