Aviation artefacts to go on display

ARTEFACTS OF note from RAF Leuchars squadrons past and present are to go on display in a new memorabilia centre.

A museum is to be created at the Fife airbase to store, preserve and exhibit valuable memorabilia which documents its heritage.

It will be housed in the old air control tower and will be open to members of the public who visit the station for a tour.

Ahead of the opening, hopefully next year, an appeal was issued for donations or loans of items which form part of the station’s history.

While the station already has artefacts from organisations within the station, including the two flying squadrons and the recently disbanded 56 (Reserve) Squadron, it hopes members of the public and former personnel may be able to add to its collection.

Among the items which will be on display are a fin from a Tornado F3 decorated with the 56 Squadron colours and the uniform and medals of Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier.

Flight Lieutenant Duncan MacNiven said, “We have a lot of memorabilia around the station, in squadrons and crew rooms which we want to collect together.”

Aviation at Leuchars dates back to 1911, when a balloon squadron of the Royal Engineers set up a training camp in Tentsmuir Forest.

To donate items call Fl Lt MacNiven or Squadron leader Sue Freeman on (01334) 839471, extension 7948, 7286 or 6050.
