A LORRY driver had a lucky escape after his windscreen was shattered by a missile thrown from a motorway flyover, it has emerged.
The incident happened on the M90 south of Perth on Thursday afternoon and police are warning it could have had fatal consequences.
Officers are now hunting for a youth they believe responsible for throwing the projectile, forcing the lorry off the road.
The 37-year-old driver was passing under the junction seven flyover at Kinross in his articulated lorry when the item smashed into the windscreen.
As he had approached the junction, he became aware of a boy standing on the flyover and hurling something at the cab.
The driver managed to control his vehicle and steer it into a lay-by from where called the police.
No other rush hour traffic was affected.
Sergeant Ronnie Forbes, of Perth’s road policing department, said the incident could easily have been fatal for the lorry driver himself or another motorist.
He said, “Words cannot adequately describe how stupid and irresponsible this youth has been.
“This is a very serious incident and one that could have had tragic consequences. What this youth may think is a bit of harmless fun could have resulted in the deaths of innocent motorists.”
A description of the culprit— thought to be a young teenager—has been issued, and police are keen to trace him.
He is believed to be around 14 years old, possibly with fair hair, and was wearing three-quarter length white bottoms. He also had a push bike with him.
Sgt Forbes added, “Anyone who can identify the boy responsible, or anyone who remembers seeing him in the area, should get in touch with Tayside Police immediately on 0845 600 5705.”
