A MAN dubbed “Britain’s smelliest criminal” appeared in court yesterday—after being given a shower by security officers.
Just last week a case involving Neil Turner from Perth was conducted in his cell rather than the courthouse due to his particularly pungent pong.
Yesterday his nasty niff was once again a cause for concern at the town’s sheriff court.
On this occasion officers were able to give the 59-year-old a quick shower before accompanying him to the dock.
Turner, of York Place, admitted that he breached bail by visiting Nimmo Avenue in Perth just a few hours after being forbidden from going there.
Depute Fiscal John Malpass told the court Turner had previously been banned from entering the road following a “domestic incident”.
“Police attended at a property on Nimmo Avenue after receiving several reports of a disturbance within,” he said.
“Officers were concerned for the safety of the female occupant and repeatedly knocked on the door.
“When they got no reply they decided to check the rear of the premises.
“The officers looked through a bedroom window and saw the accused sitting on the bed.”
Far from being perturbed by the appearance of police at the window of a house he was banned from entering, Turner apparently began to serenely wave at the officers.
“When police attracted his attention the accused waved at them but still refused to open the door,” Mr Malpass said.
“Still concerned for the safety of the property’s female occupant, officers called a joiner and the door was broken down.”
Mr Malpass said the woman was eventually found in a “drunken condition” but otherwise fine.
The depute fiscal added that the pair were by and large united by their love of alcohol rather than their love of each other.
Meanwhile, solicitor David Holmes insisted both parties were “vulnerable” and had problems with excessive alcohol consumption.
“Clearly there are issues relating to alcohol,” he said.
Deferring sentence until June 18 for reports Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said he felt there was no option but to remand Turner in custody.
“My options are limited,” he said.
“Fines issued by the court in the past have not been paid and they obviously do not get through.
“As such I will defer sentence for reports and bail will be refused.
“You will be remanded in custody as I have no confidence whatsoever that you will not re-offend.”
Last night a court source said, “It is pretty disgusting. Security staff should not have to give an accused a shower just so he can appear in court.
“He must be Britain’s smelliest criminal.”
