Teenager’s hair attack trauma

A DUNDEE teenager struggled to hold back his tears last night as he described the traumatic moment three hooded youths pinned him down and cut his hair and eyebrows with a razor and scissors.

The youths set upon Daryl Beattie (14) as he walked alone between classes at Braeview Academy. In the unprovoked attack they pinned down his arms and legs before taking huge chunks out of his shoulder-length brown hair.

Video footage of the attack at lunchtime yesterday was allegedly taken and distributed among pupils.

Last night at his mother’s home in Fintry, Daryl attempted to conceal the damage with a hooded top pulled over his eyes.

He said, “I was walking through the school block, through the cage that leads to the science classrooms when someone grabbed me and put me into a headlock.

“There were three people all with their hoods up and their faces covered. They threw me into the wall and then put me back in a headlock.

“Two of them grabbed my legs and threw me up in the air. Then they pinned me down and I couldn’t get my hands free.”

Daryl continued, “They had a razor and scissors and started cutting at my hair and shaving my eyebrows.”

He did not recognise any of his attackers and has no idea why they singled him out.

He said, “Their faces were well covered and I’m not sure how old they were, but they were bigger than me.

“One had an Arsenal top on and another had a blue and black hooded jumper.

“The other one had a McKenzie jacket which was blue and black too.”

After struggling free, Daryl ran home. His mum, Sharon McCourt, visited the school but the head teacher and a guidance teacher were not available.

The family, who want Daryl to move schools, has had an apology by phone, she said.

A spokesperson from Dundee City Council said, “The school is taking it very seriously.”

Police say an investigation is under way.
