A DUNDEE father yesterday said his family was still trying to work out why his “happy-go-lucky” son would take his own life at the age of just 29.
Kevin (Kev) MacFarlane was found dead a week past Sunday at his girlfriend’s home.
His death came as a complete shock to his family as he gave no indication of being unhappy and had been making plans for the future.
Kev was going away with girlfriend Vickie and children Natasha (12) and Paul (six) to Bulgaria in September and had just renewed his Glasgow Rangers season ticket.
His parents, Alex and Anne, of Linlathen, said Kev’s death had come as a total shock to everyone. Mr MacFarlane described Kev as “one in a million.”
“He was just a happy-go-lucky guy who would help anybody,” he said. “He had an infectious sense of humour—there was only one Kevin.
“We’re all trying to get by but it’s difficult because we’ve never experienced anything like this before. He never gave any clue that he was unhappy and everyone’s stunned by what’s happened.
“If we get down, we just think of the good times, and with Kevin they were all good times.”
Kev was educated at Mid Craigie Primary and Morgan Academy. He was a bricklayer to trade and also worked as a delivery driver with Kingsway Cuisine, which closed the shop for a day as a mark of respect to the popular employee.
He had been playing with his children in the garden a week past Saturday before going out to deliver at night. He was due to watch some of his friends play football for Cutty Sark against Douglas Athletic in the McGuire Trophy Final the following morning at Caird Park.
When they did not see him at the game, his friends thought he had slept in after a night out.
Mr MacFarlane said that when people in the pub heard about Kev’s death, grown men sank to their knees.
Kev and Vickie had been together since they were at school.
She is also struggling to come to terms with the death of her beloved boyfriend.
“They knew each other all their lives,” said Mr MacFarlane.
“Vickie’s trying to get by but it’s difficult because they were so close.
“Kevin’s son Paul keeps asking when Tuesday’s coming because that’s the day he always saw his dad.
“He was Rangers daft and was a season ticket holder.
“He had renewed his season ticket and was booked to go to Bulgaria in September with Vickie and the kids,” added Mr MacFarlane.
“He’d also planned to carry out a job on Sunday so he was looking forward.
“That’s why what’s happened has left us totally shocked.”
Kev had two brothers, Alex (30) and Paul (22).
His funeral takes place at Birkhill Cemetery today.
