Post office move is to go ahead

The store which will be the new location of the post office.

ROYAL MAIL yesterday confirmed that Broughty Ferry’s post office will be moving from its present location in Brook Street to a shop on the north side of the railway line.

The proposal, which caused some controversy in the community, came at the end of a six-week consultation process. Although concerns were expressed that access to the facility if it shifted to the KeyStore premises at 128 Gray Street would be more difficult, a Royal Mail spokesman said the move will be completed in a matter of weeks.

He added, “A date for the move has yet to be finalised but I can confirm the post office will be relocated at the KeyStore. One of the concerns about this location was that there was no automatic door but one will be installed for disabled access before the move.

“There will be a brand new, purpose-built serving counter with three secure positions and one open-plan position.

“The relocation is expected to take place over the summer.”

Post Office Ltd, part of the Royal Mail Group, studied comments, objections and suggestions from interested parties before reaching its decision.

Local councillor Rod Wallace was one of those who objected to the move. Last night he said he was “disappointed” that people sharing his view had not won the day.

However, he added, “I hope it works out because we really need to retain a post office in the Ferry.

“I still foresee difficulties because of the new location relative to where elderly and disabled people live. Hopefully, we will not see a situation again like we had some time ago when the level crossing was closed, otherwise that would completely isolate the post office from a lot of people.

“It’s not all doom and gloom, though, and I wish the post office well.”
