A CARNOUSTIE railway level crossing looks likely to be upgraded.
Angus Council’s infrastructure services committee voted 8-6 in favour of the work to improve safety at the Station Road crossing.
The work still has one further hurdle to overcome after some councillors expressed concerns that not enough was being done to tackle the problem of glare from the sun and referred the proposal to the full council.
Under the plans Network Rail plans to paint yellow box markings on the junction, install new LED lights and low hoods to make warning signals more visible and possibly lower part of the wall to the south-west of the signal boxes.
An option to install CCTV on the crossing to provide extra evidence for prosecutions is also being looked at. Angus Council is also being asked to prune back trees near the junction to improve visibility.
But although the work was welcomed, some councillors argued it didn’t go far enough and warned that winter sun virtually blinded drivers—especially after rain.
They stressed that screening of the road from low sun and anti-glare road surfacing be installed as well.
However, council officials were unaware of any road surface which could reduce the glare of sun in wet conditions.
