Veteran Sandy keeps on running

VETERAN FIFE runner Sandy Chalmers is looking forward to yet another medal for his collection when he takes part in the Glenrothes Road Running Festival on Sunday.

At 74, Sandy, of Glenrothes, shows no signs of giving up the running which has seen him take part in events in Honolulu, New York and Beijing, as well as more than 20 events in Glenrothes since the festival began 26 years ago.

In 2004, Sandy completed the original marathon route in Greece.

In April he completed his 50th marathon, when he took part in the London Marathon, finishing in a very respectable four hours and 40 minutes.

Sandy said, “At the moment my sights are simply set on doing my best back here in Glenrothes this weekend and I will look forward to as many people as possible turning out either to take part or to cheer on runners like myself along the way.”

Sandy, a leading light in the Scottish Veterans’ Club, only took up running in earnest at the age of 50.

“A friend of mine was warned about his cholesterol and he asked me to go along to the Sports Institute with him in an effort to lose weight,” he said.

“I got the exercise bug and, when I saw the posters for the Glenrothes Road Race I decided to take part, never missing one ever since.

“Having run all over the world there is nothing quite like the event here on my doorstep and I look forward to it every year as it is truly one of the friendliest and most enjoyable anywhere.”
