A TEENAGER who climbed out of a window and attempted to shin up a drainpipe to escape arrest, in full view of a large crowd, appeared from custody at Dundee Sheriff Court yesterday.
Bruce Harper (19), of Bowbridge Place, Dundee, admitted that on Wednesday, at a flat in Provost Road, having been informed police were there to execute a warrant for his arrest, he refused to open the door, barricaded the door against officers, repeatedly climbed out of a window, attempted to climb a drainpipe, all in an attempt to prevent his arrest and he did this with intent to pervert the course of justice and attempted to pervert the course of justice.
He also admitted that, during the same incident, he committed a breach of the peace by threatening police officers with violence, shouting and swearing and that he damaged fixtures, fittings and furniture and repeatedly cut himself with glass. He further admitted committing both offences while on bail.
Harper was taken to hospital after finally jumping from the drainpipe to the garden below, injuring himself in the process, to bring the stand-off to a close.
He appeared in the dock yesterday with his face and neck covered in dressings.
Solicitor Scott Norrie said Harper was a “naive, troubled, immature young man” who was also receiving treatment for depression.
Sheriff Alistair Duff told Harper that, because he is under 21, reports would be required before sentence can be passed.
He said only concern for the loss of his employment prevented him from being remanded in custody for the preparation of the reports.
The sheriff adjourned sentencing to July 10 and allowed Harper bail, with a curfew confining him to his home between 7pm and 7am.
