Pupils’ beach clean

The entire second year at Waid Academy in Anstruther is once more about to embark on a major clean of two coastal areas, one at St Monans and the other at Cellardyke.

The work has been organised in conjunction with the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust’s “clean team” and the council’s environmental services.

It will involve around 160 students co-ordinated by teacher Alice Pearson.

The area targeted at St Monans lies west of Newark Castle, and is a popular section of the Fife Coastal Path and a special site of scientific interest (SSSI).

The trust project co-ordinator Eddie McHutchison said the area is “catch point” for all sorts of flotsam and jetsam, including a large amount of plastics and debris from the fishing industry.

“The St Monans community recently cleaned up from St Monans Harbour to Newark Castle, and this will involve approximately another 800m of shoreline to the west that is notoriously hard to access and remove litter from,” he said.

The focus at Cellardyke will be the East Shore adjacent to Kilrenny, along towards Caiplie, which is also badly affected by marine litter.

The Waid students will be continuing their work from last year, working towards an Eco Award.

This year the difference is they are trying to address areas that do not have an existing cleaning regime.

The event will take place on Tuesday.
