Fun day for Chernobyl children

A GROUP of Chernobyl children enjoyed a day of fun and games with Tayside Police yesterday.

Officers and staff at the force’s eastern division HQ in Forfar hosted the 12 youngsters, who are visiting Angus thanks to the Chernobyl Children Life Line charity.

The Belarussian children were also joined by their host families for what is an annual event, along with senior police officers and other police staff.

Every year, children are brought to Angus for several weeks by the charity.

Their own homes are located in rural areas that suffer from the most profound deprivation and poverty as a result of the Chernobyl disaster and a poor economy.

Tayside Police’s Heather Clark, who organised this year’s visit to the Forfar station, said, “We are delighted to welcome the children here again this year.

“As on previous occasions, we hope this is an unforgettable experience for them.

“The youngsters will play party games, have their faces painted and be entertained by a children’s entertainer, as well as enjoying a range of other activities.

“We also have the use of leisure equipment provided by the SAFE Project.

Heather added, “Their own families struggle at the very margins of existence so it is a privilege for us to put a smile on the children’s faces and give them a day to remember.

“We have received generous gifts and donations from the Eighteen And Under charity, Woolworths and many others.

“Thanks to their generosity, the kids will take happy memories and mementos of their time here away with them.”

Eastern division Commander Chief Superintendent Alan Campbell added, “I am delighted to welcome the youngsters here today and extend my thanks to Heather for ensuring that their visit to us is a fun and memorable one.

“Tayside Police is proud to be associated with this worthwhile project,” he added.
