Celebrating cultural diversity

The diversity of Dundee’s cultural identity was celebrated yesterday.

Dundee Community Language Advisory Group (DCLAG) organised the Many Cultures—One Celebration event at the Ardler Complex on Turnberry Avenue.

Those attending the event were treated to a day of music and dance performances in traditional Bengali, Indian and Pakistani.

Based at Central Library in the Wellgate, DCLAG provides community language classes to children and young people to enable effective communication and engagement between older people and younger generations.

The organisation also aims to raise awareness and greater understanding of different cultures in Dundee.

Project co-ordinator Mohammed Afzal said, “The DCLAG has now run for 10 years and we try to raise awareness of the many cultures throughout Dundee.

“The event is not for only one community and not for just one culture—it is open to everybody.”

Depute leisure, arts and communities convener Mohammed Asif attended to open the celebration.

He said, “I fully support the group and all that they do for the local communities—they are doing a wonderful job.

“When the group began they taught people in their mother tongue but it has now gone further than that and has been a great success.”
