Appeal for fans to plan route

McDiarmid Park is made ready for the concert.

PERTH POLICE last night appealed for fans of Elton John to plan their route ahead of his concert tomorrow.

And with parking at a premium near McDiarmid Park, Inspector Ken Brown, head of road policing at Perth’s western division, is asking concert-goers to leave in plenty of time.

“I would advise those going to the Elton John concert to arrive early,” he said.

“They should use the help of the designated pointsmen and plan their route beforehand.”

He continued, “People in Perth should use the shuttle buses in Mill Street or car parks two and three. Motorists should note that they won’t get their car right up to the ground.”

Mr Brown said that there will be around 6500 car parking spaces available within “walking distance” of McDiarmid Park tomorrow.

“Car parking tickets will be pre-sold up to this limit,” he added. “We are really trying to encourage people to use the shuttle buses as they won’t get too close to the stadium.

“Motorists should check the local radio and the Traffic Scotland website in case there are big delays. And we have an arrangement with Traffic Scotland that in the event of this happening they will display signs on the main roads into Perth.

“Car park one will only be available for disabled people and VIPs. Car park two will be located behind the East Stand and access will be via the road beside the crematorium.

“Once both these car parks are full, we will use the parking facilities at Perth College. This will be for vehicles travelling from the city centre.

“In addition, parking (900 spaces) will be available at the Scottish and Southern Energy site in Dunkeld Road. A shuttle bus will take people from here to the venue.

“And for those travelling from Dundee and Edinburgh, they will be able to use parking at the Perth Mart (500 spaces), located on the south side of the A85 Crieff Road.

“There will also be parking available in fields north of the A85. Seven hundred spaces will be given in car park six and 1300 in car park seven.

“There are also a couple of additional sites on ‘stand-by’ should they be required.”

The concert begins at 7pm.
