‘Long-term future’ for NCR in city

DUNDEE WEST MP Jim McGovern was given further assurances about NCR’s plans for Dundee by management yesterday.

Mr McGovern arranged the meeting after the US manufacturing giant announced 51 of its 800-strong Dundee workforce are to be made redundant.

The job losses come just a year after NCR slashed 627 jobs as they switched the bulk of their manufacturing operations to Hungary, where staff costs are lower.

The Labour MP met the three-strong team of Allan Valentine, Todd Dick and Adam Crichton yesterday.

“The view of all three was that not only does NCR have an immediate future in Dundee, it also has a long-term future,” said Mr McGovern. “I said that if there was anything I could do to help secure the future of the plant then I would do it—there are still around 800 jobs there.”

Mr McGovern also discussed 10 workers who have been brought to Dundee from India so they become familiar with manufacture of new products.

The MP was concerned the workers were brought to the UK as cheap labour and were not complying with either minimum wage of immigration legislation.

However, he has been told this is not the case.

“I’ve received categorical assurances from NCR management that the Home Office did an audit prior to issuing visas and that everything is in full compliance with the law,” said Mr McGovern.

Earlier this week, the trade union Unite said it feared NCR’s operations in Dundee could close completely as the “next step” after the second round of redundancies.

However, a company spokesman said, “The reductions we have implemented are to streamline the organisation to help improve the company’s cost-effectiveness.

“We want to re-state that Dundee remains a major centre for us.”

Union regional officer Gillian McKay also attended yesterday’s meeting, but was unavailable for comment last night.
