AN ALLEGED threat made by mobile phone from an escaped Perth convict will not be pursued by police, it was stressed last night.
Kenny Docherty (29), of Bridgeton, Glasgow, had made the claim that he received the text message before Thomas Edgar (21) went on the run from Perth Prison on Monday.
Edgar (pictured), who is originally from Kirkcaldy, was convicted of attempted murder at Edinburgh High Court in January 2006, and sentenced to seven years in prison.
He was an inmate at Polmont Young Offenders’ Institute before being sent to Friarton Hall Young Offenders’ Institute at Perth Prison.
Edgar is understood to have family in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow. He was on temporary work release on Monday in Perth but failed to return and was reported missing at 5.30pm.
A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police last night told The Courier that there had been no formal complaint made by Mr Docherty in relation to the alleged text threat.
She said, “We can confirm that there is no active police investigation into this matter. We have decided that it doesn’t merit an investigation.”
Meanwhile, Perth MSP Roseanna Cunningham pointed
out that she will be keeping in touch with Perth Prison with regard to the search for Edgar.
“The immediate priority is to find, apprehend and return this man to custody,” she said.
“But whenever a prisoner absconds—whether from work release, a hospital visit or from the prison itself—serious questions must be answered and I will be asking the governor of Perth prison to keep me informed as to the outcome of those investigations.”
“I am sure that the police will be doing all in their power to apprehend him and I would urge anyone with any information that might be help- ful to contact the authorities immediately.”
A police spokesman said that they are continuing their inquiries into trying to trace Edgar.
He is described as being six feet tall with a muscular build. He has short fair hair, blue eyes and a pale complexion.
Edgar has a “home-made” tattoo of a cannabis leaf on his back.
When last seen he was wearing a black and white tracksuit top (white sleeves, shoulders and chest, the rest of the top is black), black jeans and white trainers.
He also had a black rucksack with him.
