Bishops converge on Dundee ahead of Lambeth conference

BISHOPS FROM as far afield as USA, Africa and Canada have been experiencing good Scottish hospitality in Dundee this weekend ahead of attending the Lambeth Conference.

The Diocese of Brechin arranged for bishops from across the globe to stay with families in the diocese since their arrival in Scotland on Thursday.

Swaziland and Iowa are companion dioceses to Brechin and on Saturday night Bishop Meshack Mabuza from Swaziland, Bishop Alan Scarfe from Iowa, Bishop Leslie Walker of Mpumalanga, South Africa, and Bishop James Njegovan from Brandon, Canada were treated to dinner onboard the RSS Discovery.

Deputy Lord Provost, Joe Morrow, who hosted the dinner, said, “The visit to Dundee has allowed the visitors to experience an area covered by the diocese.

“I decided to host dinner onboard the RSS Discovery because the ship is so significant to the city.”

Last night the bishops attended a celebratory service at the city’s St Paul’s Cathedral where a special service of Choral Vespers took place and the Cathedral Choir also sung.

While in the area the visitors will attend a civic reception in the City Chambers tonight.

Their visit has been arranged prior to attending the Lambeth Conference, held every 10 years.

Other dioceses in Scotland, England and Wales have also been hosting visiting bishops before the conference.

The visitors will travel to Canterbury on Tuesday to attend the conference at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
