TEN DRIVERS have been arrested for road traffic offences during the first week of Tayside Police’s summer drink and drugs driving campaign.
Officers arrested seven men—all aged 18 to 26—and three women during the crackdown.
Those arrested included a 46-year-old Perthshire woman who was caught on two occasions during the same day, and a 20-year-old man who was over the drink-drive limit and driving a stolen vehicle.
A total of 149 motorists were reported for speeding, while 98 drivers and four passengers were fined for failing to wear a seat-belt and 24 drivers for using their mobile phone while driving.
“I’m particularly concerned so many young men in particular are failing to heed the warnings,” said Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing in the region.
“It is ridiculous in this day and age, when there is so much publicity highlighting the risks and consequences of drink-driving, that those drivers get into a car with no regard for themselves or other road users.
“All drivers should be aware that our officers will continue to tackle this reckless behaviour, which is certainly not restricted to young drivers.”
Two of the drivers arrested last week were caught directly as a result of calls from members of the public.
“Once again I am indebted to and congratulate those who called in and reported potential drink or drug drivers,” Chief Inspector Bowman said.
“These additional ‘eyes’ help us in our efforts to make roads safer.
“Unfortunately there are always going to be those who will continue to drive under the influence of drink or drugs and continue to be a risk to everyone,” he added.
“Again, I would urge anyone who knows of a drink or drug driver to call us immediately, and our officers will be delighted to respond.”
Chief Inspector Bowman added, “If you have had alcohol or taken drugs—and this could include prescription drugs—think twice before getting in your vehicle.
“If you are in any doubt about your fitness to drive then get someone else to drive or take a taxi or public transport—don’t risk it.”
The campaign continues until next week.
Anyone with information related to drink or drug drivers is urged to telephone Tayside Police on 0845 600 5705, or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 55 111.
