Perthshire town tops property rich list

Peaceful living through significant spending—Caledonian Crescent in Auchterarder.

A NEW property rich list has revealed Scotland’s two most expensive streets are in a picturesque and unassuming Perthshire town.

The average property prices on Caledonian Crescent, Auchterarder, are a whopping £1.8m, putting even Edinburgh’s prestigious thoroughfares in the shade.

Meanwhile, those looking to move in to nearby Balmoral Court can expect to shell out a credit crunch-defying £1.5 million, making it the country’s second most expensive street.

Wester Coates Avenue in Edinburgh comes in a distant third on the new list, compiled by property valuation website Zoopla.

The staggering cost of living in Auchterarder will shock many— although last night locals revealed Caledonian Crescent is known in the town as millionaires’ row.

A Zoopla spokesman confirmed the town’s popularity with a mix of wealthy businessmen, rich commuters and sports stars.

“Auchterarder is home to the world-famous Gleneagles Hotel complex and golf course, so it is no surprise to see that the two most expensive streets to buy a property are located there,” he said.

“The legendary former snooker champion Stephen Hendry also lives locally.

“Scotland’s capital and second largest city, Edinburgh, dominates the remainder of the top 20 highest value streets list, with 12 streets around the capital making the cut.

“As a result of the property boom of the past few years, Edinburgh now has over 200 streets where home values currently stand at over £500,000.

“This compares to only 109 such streets in Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow.”

However, it would appear the country’s big guns simply cannot compete with Auchterarder.

“Most of the people here probably earn average wages, but Caledonian Crescent is known locally as millionaire’s row,” said Auchterarder resident Steve MacDougall.

“It is very near to Gleneagles Hotel and I am sure that pushes the price up.

“Auchterarder is very well located in terms of commuting to the big cities, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, so that probably helps as well.”

Mr MacDougall said the town seems to be a draw for the wealthy.

“A lot of sportspeople have lived here in the past and Stephen Hendry still lives in the town,” he continued.

“It is very popular with golfers due to its proximity to Gleneagles —people with cash just seem to be attracted to Auchterarder.

“Local people do not have any issues at all with the people who live on these streets but it is very clear that they are from a different social class,” Mr MacDougall added.

One 50-year-old woman who was born and bred in Auchterarder said she was “amazed” by the price tags.

“I never thought I would see the day when properties in the town would cost that much,” she said.

“It is just amazing but I suppose it is good news for Auchterarder.

“The houses up that end of town (close to Gleneagles) are beautiful so perhaps it should not come as so much of a surprise.”

Statistics released by Zoopla also place the Perthshire community of Lochearnhead as one the most desirable in Scotland.

Average property prices there are a jaw-dropping £276,099—well over £100,000 more than the national average.
