Police close to catching Perth firestarters

THE POLICE are close to catching three Perth youths who they believe caused a fierce blaze that forced almost 40 people out of their homes, The Courier understands.

The fire, on a disused rail yard beside Tulloch Works at 8.02pm last Thursday, completely destroyed the building.

It measured 30 metres by 30 metres—almost 100ft by 100ft)—and such was the density of the smoke that 34 people were evacuated from properties in Gorse Loan and Guards Way.

They were given temporary accommodation at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Perth before returning to their homes last Friday.

British Transport Police (BTP) was helped in inquiries by Tayside Fire and Rescue, and soon said the fire was started deliberately.

While a spokesman for BTP last night said the inquiries are “continuing,” The Courier understands the force is close to catching the three youths.

They are described as aged 12 to 14, slim and between 5ft 4in and 5ft 8in.

Two had short brown hair and the other reddish hair.

Detective Inspector John Harrington, of BTP, said, “There’s no doubt this fire was started deliberately.

“I would ask anyone with any information whatsoever to come forward.”

He added, “At the moment we do not know if an accelerant was used to fuel the fire, but those responsible may have returned home smelling of smoke or possibly petrol.

“I would ask anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area of Tulloch Road to contact ourselves.

“I would also ask that anyone working in local garages or petrol stations come forward if they noticed anything suspicious, including anyone who may have purchased small quantities of petrol in a can or other container.”

British Transport Police can be contacted on 0800 405040.
