Chinese art on display

FANS OF Oriental art are in for a treat with a range of exhibitions and activities throughout August.

A show of Chinese woodblock print is mounted at Birnam Arts Centre until August 13, featuring work by one of China’s leading contemporary printmakers, Chen Qi, a professor of fine art at Beijing University who has enjoyed great success exhibiting extensively throughout the world.

His tranquil black and white traditional Chinese water-based prints depict Oriental icons suspended in time and space.

The exhibition is part of an ongoing cultural exchange programme between Perth and Kinross and China, which has been organised by Perth and Kinross Council’s Arts Development Service.

A range of students’ art work brought back from a recent art education cultural visit to Hunan Province are on show alongside Chen Qi’s work at Birnam.

The next stage of this programme will be the arrival of Xiantan University lecturers and an arts professor who will be exhibiting Chinese artwork simultaneously in Birnam Arts Centre and Perth Museum from August 18.

Also in August, Suzanne Chong will deliver Chinese art workshops at Birnam Arts Centre using authentic Chinese techniques.
