Swimming club may appear on TV

ONE OF Dundee’s best-loved swimming clubs could feature in a television documentary on the joys of open water swimming next year.

Sections of yesterday’s swim by Ye Amphibious Ancients Bathing Association were captured by a film crew accompanying London member Frank Chalmers, said YAABA chief Joyce McIntosh.

Frank, who completed a solo swim across the Channel three years ago, remains a keen Phibbie and travelled to Dundee to take part in yesterday’s race, from the Olympia in Dundee to Broughty Ferry.

“He was approached by a film company to be given permission to film the swim at the start, with everyone going into the water, and swimmers finishing at Broughty Ferry,” said Joyce.

“The idea behind this is to promote open water swimming now that it has been recognised by the Olympics.”

Yesterday’s swim attracted 11 competitors, each accompanied by a boat and crew.

“Prior to the boats launching at Broughty Ferry there was a delay due to the rolling mist on the river and advice from Port Control intimated there was only 40 yards visibility,” said Joyce.

Nevertheless, once the mist lifted conditions were ideal, with little or no wind, she continued, resulting in some record-smashing results.

Unusually, the club record was broken by a breaststroke swimmer, Mark Sales, who is one of the club’s newest members.

He completed the course in one hour and two seconds.

The first three ladies to finish were also record breakers.

First was Claire Moodie, who at 17 was competing in her first year as a senior, and finished in 1 hr 1 min 55 secs.

Second was Mary Rose Cross, with a time of 1 hr 2 min 2 secs and third was Lynsey Bovill, who finished in 1 hr 5 min 14 secs.

Other results: Gents: 2nd Frank Chalmers (1hr 6mins 45secs); 3rd Ricky Caffrey (1hr 12mins 3secs); 4th Graham Foley (1hr 13mins 40secs). Ladies: 4th Beth McDonough (1hr 11mins 53secs); 5th Maureen Miller (1hr 13min 6 secs); 6th Jessie Kidd (1hr 13min 55secs); 7th Debbie McIntyre (1hr 17min 9secs).
