GRAMPIAN Police seized almost £1.5m in assets during the first half of 2008—four times as much as in the whole of last year.
The huge jump in the figures is the result of a “significant increase” in the value of the assets restrained and the sums of money seized.
During the first six months a total of £1,479,395 worth of assets were restrained in relation to confiscation cases.
In the same period, £38,611 of cash was seized—a 48% increase on the first six months of last year.
This figure is a culmination of a number of seizures from individuals found in possession of money over £1000 in circumstances that indicated it had been obtained as a result of criminality or intended for that use.
Detective Inspector Tracy Mackay said, “It is extremely pleasing that the efforts within the force to identify and seize the profits from criminality are coming to fruition.
“It is apparent that some criminals are becoming more aware of the legislation involved and endeavour to hide their assets accordingly.
“These figures display that we have the capability to overcome this and make a positive impact.
“It is particularly gratifying to see that the money being recovered is being used to benefit others.
“A total of 12 youth projects within the Grampian area have benefited this year already with the sum of £75,732 being distributed between them.”
