Terror at teenagers stranded in river

THE PARENTS of two teenage boys last night watched in terror from the banks of a Perthshire river as their sons became stranded in the cold and treacherous waters.

The pair of 14-year-olds luckily escaped unscathed after emergency services were able to reach them using throw lines.

Police teams and Tayside fire and rescue officers were called into action after the boys got into trouble while fishing in the fast-flowing River Tummel, near Pitlochry.

The boys’ terrified parents could only helplessly observe from the riverbank as the teenagers waded out too far and found themselves stranded.

They alerted the emergency services at around 6.30pm and the pair were eventually pulled to safety half an hour later.

The boys were last night described as being “tired and cold” following their ordeal but otherwise unharmed.

A police spokesman gave details of the frightening incident.

“We were called to an incident at 6.30pm whereby two 14-year-old males had become stranded in the River Tummel,” he said.

“Police attended the locus near Logierait along with Tayside fire service.

“Officers found the youths had waded out too far when fishing and were unable to make their way back to the river bank.”

The spokesman said the pair had fortunately escaped uninjured.

“The youths were assisted from the river with the aid of throw lines,” he continued.

“They were found to be tired and cold but did not require medical attention.”
