A DOTING Dundee father collapsed and died of a heart attack as he changed his toddler daughter’s nappy during a trip to Deep Sea World.
Devoted Kevin Bennett (41) had been enjoying a day out with 15-month-old daughter Jessica and young Adam Boyack, the son of a family friend, when tragedy struck on Monday.
The dad-of-one—a machinist at Bonar Yarns factory in Dundee—had been in a private room changing Jessica’s nappy when he suddenly took ill.
Four-year-old Adam raised the alarm after managing to unlock the changing room door and alert staff at the North Queensferry aquarium.
Two employees attempted to resuscitate Mr Bennett whilst other staff members looked after Jessica and Adam.
Paramedics were summoned and took over treatment but sadly Mr Bennett died despite a last ditch attempt to save his life through emergency surgery.
The death is the third tragedy to hit the family as Mr Bennett’s sister Ann died of liver cancer nine years ago and his brother Jimmy died seven years ago after contracting an illness whilst on holiday in Thailand.
Kevin’s devastated wife Gill last night told The Courier, “At about 10.30am he was changing my wee girl’s nappy and he just collapsed.
“Adam was there as well and the door was locked. Adam had to unlock the door and go for help.
“One of the guys from the sea life centre did first-aid and tried to revive him but he couldn’t.
“The paramedics then tried open surgery to revive his heart but he had just died instantly. I just can’t get over it.”
Mrs Bennett was only alerted to the emergency after Adam told staff his mum worked in Thomas Cook in Dundee and her name was Nicola-Ann.
Adam’s mother told Gill —a work colleague—and the two best friends travelled through to Deep Sea World where they were met by a police officer and told the devastating news.
They picked up the children before heading to Queen Margaret’s Hospital in Dunfermline where Mr Bennett had been taken.
Mrs Bennett said, “My life is in ruins—he has taken me with him. We were soulmates and we did everything together.”
She added, “We have been together for 21 years and he just doted on her (Jessica).
Kevin’s mum Anne said her son’s untimely death had been a cruel blow after years of heartache.
She said, “I’m totally devastated—he was such a happy go lucky lad and everybody knew him.
“He was very friendly and got on with everybody.”
His only surviving sibling Alex said he had lost his closest friend.
He said, “He was the only brother I had left and he was my best friend. We did everything together—hillwalking and fishing—right through from school at Linlathen High.”
Mr Bennett’s wife Gill thanked those who had come to his aid when he took ill and had assisted the family in the aftermath.
Mr Bennett’s body is to be returned to Dundee today and his funeral service will take place at the city’s crematorium on Tuesday.
