Migrants may be mystery cavemen

A SHORE fisherman who regularly visits the Arbroath cliffs in pursuit of his hobby has suggested that the mysterious—and well-appointed—dwelling found by members of the local RNLI lifeboat crew in a well-concealed cave may be a occupied by Eastern European migrant workers employed on local farms.

Karl McNicoll from Edinburgh contacted The Courier and said, “I’m a fisherman and we call this area Mid Cliffs or the Horse Shoe.

“A friend of mine who lives near Rosyth was up fishing in the area in the past week or so and stumbled upon this rope ladder.

“Being a curious kind of lad, and braver than his companions, he decided to climb up and see what was at the top of it.

“When he got up there he came face to face with a bunch of people—he reckoned from their accents that they were either Polish or Romanian—and he’s not sure who got the bigger fright, him or them!

“He said they were drinking beer and, although they weren’t threatening or anything, he made his way back down and told his companions what he had seen.

“He didn’t think too much of it and didn’t bother reporting it to the police but when The Courier broke the story he remembered about it and now everyone knows.

“In my opinion it’s a very dangerous place and you would have to be seriously stupid to build something like that there.”

Karl said that the discovery of the cave, and the subsequent media interest, had prompted a deluge of comment and opinion on the WorldSeaAngling forum—a popular online community for shore and boat fishermen.

He said, “Theories have abounded from people suggesting it’s Gordon Brown’s nuclear bunker, the residence of a family of Sawney Bean-type cannibals or the headquarters of the Dark Jedi Clan.

“One of the anglers from Fife, who denied he had anything to do with its construction, said he would like to know who built it so he could rent it out at the weekends and save on petrol!”
