TWO TEENAGE vandals who caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to a Monifieth bowling green —forcing the cancellation of a gala day planned for older residents of the burgh —were each placed on prob- ation for a year at Arbroath Sheriff Court yesterday.
Daniel David Barker (16), Falkland Crescent, Broughty Ferry, and Jake Anthony Smith (16), Fonstane Crescent, Monifieth, both admitted that on June 16, at the Riverview Bowling Green, they maliciously damaged the playing surface by pouring engine oil and another unknown substance over the grass, scoring various areas of the grass with a stone and throwing stone chips over the grass.
Smith had also admitted that the following day he wilfully damaged the playing surface by scraping two shallow holes in the grass and leaving a copy of the Evening Telegraph displaying an article relating to the original incident.
The actions of Barker and Smith were widely condem- ned at the time and, following a joint appeal by police and Angus Council—which owns the bowling green— the pair were traced and charged in connection with the incident.
On a separate matter, Barker was yesterday also ordered to undertake 80 hours’ community service, having previously admitted that on April 4, in Links Parade, Carnoustie, he and another person assaulted David Grant, c/o Tayside Police, to his injury by repeatedly punching him on the head, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly kicking him on the head and body.
