Woman dies after car leaves road

AN ELDERLY woman has died after the car she was driving ended up on its roof in a ditch beside a Perthshire road on Sunday.

At about 5.55pm on the A823 Muthill to Auchterarder Road, about 200 metres east of the Machany junction, a blue Vauxhall Corsa left the road and overturned.

The woman, who has not yet been named, had to be cut free by firefighters from nearby Auchterarder.

She was then taken to accident and emergency at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where, despite the efforts of medical staff, she later died.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw the car being driven or who witnessed the accident. They can be contacted on 0845 600 5705.

* Road accidents in Perthshire yesterday left four people in hospital.

The A9 north of Perth was again involved as a vehicle left the southbound carriageway near Calvine, coming to rest in a ditch some 20 feet from the road.

Emergency services attended shortly after noon to find a blue Mazda on its side. Three occupants were trapped inside and the assistance of Tayside Fire and Rescue was required to help them from the vehicle.

A man with minor injuries and a female suffering from shock were taken to Perth Royal Infirmary as a precaution.

In the second incident, two people were taken to hospital and the A923 was completely closed following a smash at Tullybaccart.

Diversions were put in place at Birkhill and Coupar Angus after the two-vehicle accident, which occurred at around 1pm.

A 55-year-old man suffered a broken nose, while a 58-year-old woman suffered what is described as a “serious” leg injury. Both were taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital.

Last night, the woman was said to be serious but stable. The driver of a lorry involved in the crash was uninjured.
