STUDENTS AT Perth Grammar School were visited by MP for Perth and North Perthshire Pete Wishart yesterday.
He spoke to the S4 standard grade modern studies class about local and world issues that are affecting young people today.
He said, “One of the major problems that the democratic system in Scotland faces is lower turnout for elections and lack of engagement with young people and the political process. I was therefore absolutely delighted to be invited to Perth Grammar School to discuss issues facing young people in the world today.”
Mr Wishart was keen to encourage the students to enter into discussion about political affairs.
“I have found that young people are very interested in political matters such as the environment and global warming, education and housing policy and foreign affairs, but unfortunately this often does not translate into taking part in the democratic process.” he added.
“I think it is excellent that these pupils show such willingness to engage with the salient issues of today and I am looking forward to the opportunity to explore topics and debate with the voters of the future.”
