Furniture company set to cut six jobs

A DUNDEE organisation which provides jobs for people with disabilities is the latest victim of the credit crunch.

Dovetail Enterprises, which produces furniture for the domestic and commercial market, has plans to lay off six of its 75 workers.

The firm was formed in 1993 from the merger of Royal Dundee Blindcraft Products and Lord Roberts Workshop, and operates from a 100,000 sq-ft factory in Dunsinane Avenue.

The move comes after a difficult trading period for Dovetail, which has seen an unexpected drop in orders coupled with unfavourable market conditions in the sector.

Now managers have been forced to cut costs to secure the future of the workshop.

“As part of our savings we have been forced to reduce the number of people currently employed at our Dunsinane Avenue facility by six,” confirmed managing director Gavin Strachan.

“These job losses will be found from support staff posts,” he said.

“The change in our trading position is a huge disappointment following the previous seven years of good results, and it is our hope we can return to a similar position,” he added.

Dovetail employees were told the bad news at a meeting with management and union representatives are now involved in consultation on the redundancies.
