Firm to face trial on fumes charge

AN ANGUS firm is to face trial on a charge of allowing workers to be poisoned by toxic fumes at a meat plant earlier this summer.

At Forfar Sheriff Court yesterday, Sacone Environmental Ltd denied an allegation brought under the Health and Safety at Work Act that it failed to adequately assess the risk of exposure to highly toxic fumes, namely hydrogen sulphide, at its premises in Montrose Road, Brechin, on July 18.

The charge also alleges that the company failed to control a safe system of work, resulting in two named individuals and other employees being exposed to significant concentrations of the fumes and poisoned to their severe injury on that date.

Sheriff Kevin Veal continued the case until November 6.
