Tributes to Eddie Thompson

Tribal differences were placed to one side yesterday as Scottish football united to mourn the death of Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson. His beloved Tannadice was awash with tributes of all kinds, from ordinary fans on both sides of Tannadice Street, from players past and present and from rival clubs across the country. Football tops, flowers, soft toys, scarves and T-shirts bearing the legend “One Eddie Thompson” filled the car park outside the main entrance to the stadium, spilling over on to the pavement outside. Mr Thompson, one of the most respected figures in Scottish football, died early yesterday, succumbing to the prostate cancer with which he fought a very public battle. Mr Thompson took over as chairman in 2002, fulfilling a long-held ambition, but never kidded himself that he was anything other than a custodian of Dundee United while the supporters remained the “one true constant.” It was as the fans’ champion that he cemented a place in the history of Dundee United. Yesterday, they in turn showed the high regard and mutual respect in which they held their club’s chairman. Mr Thompson’s son Stephen is pictured looking at some of the floral tributes at the ground yesterday.
