Eddie’s funeral will be colourful

DUNDEE UNITED chairman Eddie Thompson’s funeral will be a colourful occasion in line with his wishes.

The Tannadice chief, who died early on Wednesday, had informed his family that those attending should wear bright clothing rather than the customary dark attire.

The ceremony will take place this Wednesday at 1pm in St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Queen Street, Broughty Ferry.

While the service will be open to close family and invited friends only, it will be broadcast via loudspeaker outside the church.

The burial service will be strictly private.

The family have requested family flowers only. Donations in lieu, if so desired, should go to Ward 32 at Ninewells Hospital.

At the stadium the strips, scarves, flags and flowers continued to be laid in Mr Thompson’s honour and the shrine will remain for several days yet.

Meanwhile, a Dundee MSP has tabled a motion to the Scottish Parliament following the death of Mr Thompson expressing sadness at his passing after his battle with cancer.

Dundee West MSP Joe FitzPatrick said the United supremo’s death was a huge loss to the city.

The motion reads:

“That the Parliament notes with sadness the death of Eddie Thompson, who passed away on 15 October 2008 after a long battle with cancer; remembers his dedication to Dundee United FC as chairman and his work in the Scottish retail industry; notes his many achievements with Dundee United, which included reaching the Scottish League Cup final in 2008 and bringing FC Barcelona to play at Tannadice; expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Eddie Thompson, and hopes that the good work that he carried out at Dundee United will inspire those at the club for many years to come.”
