DUNDEE CHESS grandmaster Colin McNab won the Open Championship at the fifth Dundee and Angus Chess Congress at Monifieth’s Next Generation club last night.
Dr McNab triumphed in the three-day event at the Ethiebeaton Park club, sponsored by Open Seas Engineering Ltd.
Ade Egbaiyelo, of Edinburgh’s Wandering Dragons club, won the Challengers event for players below 1800 points and Daniel Maxwell, of Aberdeen Chess Academy, won the Major event for below 1550.
The Minor event, for players below 1300 points, was won by Michael McRobert, from Inverness.
A “giant killer” prize went to Orkney’s John Garson for his victory over John Lynch, of Dundee.
All events were of the five-round Swiss variety, where players of a similar rating are play each other.
Angus Council deputy provost Peter Murphy opened and closed the event, and awarded prizes.
In all, 125 players took part, raising around £280 for Alzheimer Scotland.
