Diesel spill leads to delays into city from north

A JACK-KNIFED lorry spilled diesel on to a main road into Dundee yesterday, causing around two hours of major disruption for motorists.

It is understood the vehicle’s fuel tank was punctured in the incident around 5.30pm near the roundabout at the junction of Forfar Road and William Fitzgerald Way.

Police said a “large amount” of diesel ended up on the carriageway and a number of cars that came along the road in the aftermath skidded off on to a grass verge.

The police set up traffic-calming measures and alerted drivers to the problem.

A spokesman said, “We received a report that a lorry had jack-knifed coming into Dundee on the A90 and had spilled a large amount of diesel.

“Obviously traffic was tending to slide about a bit so we got several units to the scene to control traffic and warn drivers of the problem.”

The disruption caused some congestion of traffic, particularly for vehicles heading south into Dundee.

One motorist caught up in the delay said, “I was coming into the city from the north and the traffic was extremely slow for that time of night on a Sunday.

“It wasn’t until I got to the roundabout I realised what had happened. The police were out with signs to slow the traffic and warn people it was slippy.

BEAR Scotland also attended the scene and applied grit to the road, and traffic was flowing normally again by 7.30pm.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency was also notified of the situation, as is standard practice in such cases.

Nobody was injured during the incident.
