Singer visits Angus Folk

ONE of the country’s finest singers of traditional music will appear at Angus Folk’s latest singing workshop next weekend.

Gordeanna McCulloch, who is recognised as one of the top singers of her generation, will be at the workshop in Forfar on Saturday.

She was encouraged to sing at home in Glasgow from an early age but her involvement in traditional song began at Rutherglen Academy, where she was influenced by Norman Buchan.

A member of the Scots group Clutha, she made recordings for the Argo and Topic labels and toured extensively.

Her style is also said to share a link with the older generation of ballad singers, such as Jeannie Robertson and Belle Stewart.

Today she is one of the most respected singers of traditional song in Scotland.

She helped form and led Eurydice, the women’s choir, for 17 years and teaches traditional song for the Royal Scottish Academy.

The workshop will be held in St Margaret’s Church Hall, Forfar from 10am to 4.30pm, with registration from 9.30am.

Tickets cost £15, £12 for concessions or Angus Folk members and £8 for children.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in singing. To book a place call 07842 227202 or book online at www.angusfolk.org.
