Teacher’s husband hopes for legal deal

THE HUSBAND of a Dundee teacher caught up in a 13-month disciplinary wrangle has said he hopes the matter reaches an employment tribunal where a legally binding resolution can be found.

The saga between Dundee City Council and Longhaugh Primary School deputy headteacher has continued this week with the local authority now refusing to accept that suspended teacher Linda Ross is medically unfit to attend disciplinary hearings.

Although the independent Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services say Mrs Ross could attend a formal meeting, they suggested the council allow her representation, which they have refused.

Because of this, a hearing to investigate websites run by her husband Vic took place on Monday in her absence.

Both Mr and Mrs Ross were unaware it would continue without her in attendance and have not been informed of its findings.

Mr Ross also said on Monday that his wife’s condition meant disciplinary hearings would be postponed but the council has now said they will continue.

A council education department spokesman said, “An investigatory meeting concerning websites did, in fact, go ahead in the absence of Mrs Ross.

“A disciplinary meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 29 will go ahead as planned, whether Mrs Ross attends or not.

“The council position is that Mrs Ross has been declared fit to attend meetings by the independent Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services.”

Last night Mr Ross said he was “bewildered and befuddled” by the council.

“We will have to get legal advice but they seem to be a law unto themselves,” he said.

“Linda has no representation at the moment, with the EIS teaching union backing out at the 11th hour and neither I nor a legal representative are allowed to attend.

“It is beyond belief and I would hope this goes to a tribunal so things can be sorted out legally.”

Mr Ross claims full responsibility for the sites, which were set up earlier this year but it is understood the council believe Mrs Ross was involved in setting up the sites.

Mrs Ross was transferred to Longhaugh after being suspended from her former school, Sidlaw View, when her husband made claims of violent behaviour by pupils and their parents public.

One of the sites acts as a portal for teachers who believe they have been treated harshly by councils. The council claims the other site is being run as a business by Mrs Ross and contains inappropriate material.
