Kellock wants focus on Irish opponents

GLASGOW CAPTAIN Al Kellock has ordered his team-mates to forget their joy or disappointment at whether or not they made the Scotland squad trip to Spain and to concentrate on putting one over on high-flying Leinster at Firhill tonight.

The lock is one of several players who have been left out of the trip, along with No 8 Johnnie Beattie, prop Moray Low and centre Andy Henderson,

However several others in the team are making the trip as part of what will surely be the final cut of 31 players involved in the three tests next month against New Zealand, South Africa and Canada.

“There is no point either feeling sorry for ourselves or people patting themselves on the back, we have to go out and perform this week,” he said.

“Obviously I’m disappointed not to be involved but there are a few like that in our squad.

“I’ll speak to Frank Hadden and Mike Brewer before they head off to Spain to find out more about what they want, as I’m sure others will too.

“However, we’ve not played tremendously well as a team consistently, so maybe that’s what we have to look at. If we start winning games and performing well that’ll mean we can’t be ignored.”

That starts with the reigning Magners league champions, who named a strong side yesterday with only the injured Lions skipper Brian O’Driscoll missing from the backs.

Up front Leinster have rotated their props leaving out former Springbok C J Van de Linde, and will make a late decision about full-back Rob Kearney’s involvement.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh may field open-side flanker Ross Rennie for the first time this season as they take on Connacht in Galway tonight.

Out for seven months with a knee injury, the 22-year-old travels with an outsize bench as coach Andy Robinson mulls over some injury doubts.

He unsurprisingly has made no changes to the starting XV that won Edinburgh’s first Heineken Cup game in France last week for the trip to the Sportsground, where Connacht have already beaten Glasgow and Leinster this season.

Matt Mustchin and Hugo Southwell, who both missed last Saturday’s Heineken Cup win at Castres, are also named amongst the list of potential replacements.

Edinburgh (v Connacht, Sportsground, Galway, kick-off 6.30)—C Paterson; M Robertson, B Cairns, N De Luca, S Webster; P Godman, M Blair (capt); A Jacobsen, R Ford, G Cross; C Hamilton, J Hamilton; S Newlands, A MacDonald, A Hogg.

Replacements—A Kelly, G Kerr, K Traynor, M Mustchin, B Gissing, S Cross, R Rennie, G Laidlaw, D Blair, H Southwell, J Houston.
