Hannah takes charge at Links Park

MONTROSE FC announced last night that it has appointed David Hannah as caretaker player-manager.

Chairman Brian Winton said that Hannah was filling the gap created by the absence of Jim Weir and Kevin McGowne with whom the third division club is still in negotiation.

Winton said that Hannah had returned from being player-manager with an Icelandic club.

“It is the end of the season there and he returned to Dundee and was looking for something back in Scotland,” he said.

“He contacted us and offered his services.

“We were impressed when we spoke to him the last time (when Weir was appointed).

“He will pick the team for the home cup tie against Huntly on Saturday.”

The club said it would issue more details about the appointment today.

Hannah (35) began his career with Dundee United and won a Scottish Cup winner’s medal within 15 months of joining the club.

He moved to Celtic for £650,000 and went on to make over 40 league appearances for the Parkhead club, picking up a league winner’s medal and a League Cup medal during the 1997-98 season and completing a clean sweep of domestic honours.

In 1999, Hannah returned to Tannadice in a £300,000 deal—just over two years since his departure—and went on to make over 150 league appearances during his second spell before leaving in 2002.

Hannah moved to Cypriot side AEL Limassol before returning to Scotland in 2003 with Ross County and in 2004 moved to St Johnstone where he spent two seasons before a succession of short-term moves within Britain and Iceland.

In October last year, following the end of the Icelandic season, Hannah was on loan to Cowdenbeath but the agreement was cut short because of injury and he returned to Icelandic side Fylkir.
