A GAGGLE of green- fingered pupils from Dundee’s Blackness Primary School did their bit to improve the environment at the city’s Western Cemetery yesterday.

The Primary Six pupils were enlisted to plant bulbs by the Western Cemetery Association as part of their drive to encourage biodiversity at the Perth Road site.

The scheme has already seen the introduction of a long lavender hedge and beds of fuchsias at the cemetery’s entrance, which have been attracting bees and butterflies all summer.

The children added a patch of crocii in front of the new hedge, which will bloom next spring.

Alan Young of the Western Cemetery Association said, “The aim of the exercise is to involve and engage local children in their environment.

“The kids of today are the adults of tomorrow and the knowledge they pick up today can be used in future.”
