SCORES OF people turned out for a spectacular fund- raising event organised by Macmillan Cancer Support in the Scores Hotel in St Andrews on Saturday.
The Donate-A-Dress initiative encouraged women of all ages to donate one or two special occasion items to the charity before buying something new for Christmas or New Year.
In an overwhelming response, more than 300 garments were given, including a fabulous Escada full-length dress donated by Caroline Harrington, wife of twice Open winner Padraig.
It was worn by her at a function held at the Ryder Cup in the USA and was sold by silent auction on Saturday, fetching £200.
Macmillan fund-raiser Carolyne Nurse said later, “We had a staggering response, exceeding all expectations. We were delighted with the level of interest shown in the event and the quality of the donations.
“But we still have lots of donated garments left and we are planning a second event in St Andrews soon.”
The charity aims to hold the second sale during the week, to allow those who work on Saturdays and were unable to attend the first event to go along.
Prices at Saturday’s sale started at £10, while special items were sold by silent auction. Customers could also seek make-up advice from local Body Shop At Home representative Amanda Pomeroy.
Proceeds from Saturday’s event totalled around £3000 for the cancer charity.
