College printer John Brown dies

THE FORMER head of the printing department at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, John Brown, has died. He was 89.

Born and raised in Leicester, Mr Brown became an apprentice with a commercial print company at the age of 14. He worked during the day, then attended print classes at art college in the evenings.

He was a conscientious objector, so spent the war years working on various farms in the Leicester area.

In 1948, he travelled to Mysore in India to run a printing press for a missionary society. On returning to Britain in 1952, he trained to be a teacher, worked in Maidstone and Bolton, then moved to Dundee in 1958 as head of the printing department at Duncan of Jordanstone—a post he eventually retired from in 1982.

In retirement, he again went to India and Pakistan to teach printing. He was involved with the hospitality exchange body Servas International and joined the Grampian Club hillwalkers.

Mr Brown, who lived at Blebo Craigs in Fife, was predeceased by his wife Sylvia and survived by sons Ian, Andrew and Graeme and six grandchildren. His funeral is at Dundee Crematorium today.
