Theatre group’s return for mum battling cancer

A DEFUNCT THEATRE group which reformed for a one-off charity production has raised more than £7000 for a Fife mother who is battling breast cancer.

Mother of two Diane Wishart, from Dunfermline, is hoping to top up her chemotherapy with £60,000 worth of private treatment as she fights the disease.

The cancer resurfaced in February after Diane had been in remission for two years.

When members of the former Kingdom Musical Theatre Company heard about her plight they decided to dust off their costumes one last time.

One of Diane’s work colleagues, Tom Weanie, from Dunfermline, and his fellow KMTC director Cathie McKay, from Lochgelly, got the show back on the road.

Their show, entitled West End To Broadway, proved a huge hit when it played for two nights at the Lochgelly Theatre.

Mr Weanie, who works for Fife Council’s environmental services department, was able to hand over a cheque for £7500 to the Diane Wishart Appeal.

Diane said, “This is by far the biggest single donation to the fund and I thank everyone involved from the bottom of my heart.”

Mr Weanie added, “There is still more money to come in from the sale of the DVD of the show, but we wanted to hand any profits over as soon as we could.

“In all the years I have produced and directed musical theatre I have never had such a huge reaction to a show.

“Patrons of Kingdom attending the show said it was the company’s best ever.”

Copies of the DVDs are available from Mr Weanie on 01383 853155.

He added, “It was a great result from a great time had by all involved.

“This show has raised more profit in two nights than most amateur companies raise running for a full week.”

Mr Weanie is now directing a Christmas production of Peter Pan for the Fife Children’s Theatre.
