TWO PEOPLE were killed and two others were fighting for their lives after a collision late last night on the A92 Arbroath to Montrose road near Lunan.
A man and woman died when their blue Vauxhall Meriva and a black Vauxhall Astra Coupe were in collision at Upper Dysart around 10.20.
An elderly passenger in the Meriva and the driver of the Astra were seriously injured.
The Astra is understood to have been travelling south from Montrose, and the Meriva travelling north, when the collision occurred.
Eight police units, ambulances and cutting equipment from Tayside Fire and Rescue attended and the road was expected to be closed for several hours while investigations were carried out.
“We received a call shortly after 10.20pm to say that a collision had occurred near Upper Dysart,” said a police spokesperson.
“As a result of the crash a male and a female were both killed. An elderly passenger in the rear of the Meriva was also seriously injured and was taken to Ninewells. We don’t yet know the extent of her injuries.
“The condition of the driver of the Astra is also thought to be serious.
“Any witnesses who may have seen the crash, who saw the black Astra travelling from Montrose, or the blue Meriva travelling northbound before the collision are urged to get in touch.
“Road closure orders have been put in place and diversions set up while accident investigations are carried out.
“We expect them to be on site for some time as both vehicles are extensively damaged.”
In an earlier accident on the A92, three fire engines were called to a crash near the Lower Northwater Bridge. A black Peugeot 306 was on its roof after leaving the road on the A92 north of Montrose. Four people had been travelling in the vehicle, but fortunately no one suffered anything more serious than minor injuries.
Fire engines from Inverbervie, Stonehaven and Montrose attended.
