Duffy expects City to rise to challenge

BRECHIN CITY’S new manager Jim Duffy will have an almost fully fit squad to choose from for tonight’s fourth round Homecoming Scottish cup-tie against Premier League St Mirren.

Davie White is the only missing player after breaking his leg two weeks ago, but Duffy is unlikely to tinker too much with the line-up.

Last night was his first chance to meet many of the players and watch a training session.

“I expect the players to rise to the challenge,” said Duffy. “The best advice I could give is to go out and win the game.

“The players have to be brave and be prepared to take a risk. They don’t want to be sheepish and, while we will need to have a game plan, when the players have the ball I want them to express themselves.

“If we are too tentative we will give them the game.

“All the feedback I get is that Brechin are more than capable of getting the ball down, being composed and passing it. If we play kick-and-rush, St Mirren will pick us off.”

Brechin have struggled to hit their best form since the beginning of November.

A series of postponed matches allied to the departure of Michael O’Neill has not helped them get back on the rails.

Tonight’s cup-tie, which kicks off at 7.45, is a chance to boost confidence in preparation for Duffy’s main challenge of getting City’s promotion campaign back on track.

The long-term absence of White is one of the reasons that club chairman Ken Ferguson has indicated that Duffy will be allowed to dip into the transfer market over the coming weeks.

Admission prices for the rescheduled cup-tie have been cut. Prices are: adults £10, concessions £5, parent and accompanied child £12, additional children £2. Season tickets are valid.

Strict segregation will be in force with home fans requested to use the Cemetery End turnstiles and visiting fans by the main entrance off Trinity Road.
