THE BOUNDARY Commission of Scotland has dismissed a call from Labour MP Lindsay Roy to change the name of his constituency.
Mr Roy has been in touch with the commission requesting the constituency’s “Glenrothes” title be reviewed because it does not reflect the range of communities contained within it.
As well as Glenrothes, the constituency also takes in Cardenden, Leslie, Markinch, Kennoway, Methil and a small area of Kirkcaldy.
Hugh Buchanan, secretary of the Boundary Commission , said because of the time and expense that would be required, a review would not be carried out on Mr Roy’s request.
However he said all of Scotland’s constituencies were set for an overhaul either next year or 2012 and at that time the commission would be open to suggestions for renaming the Glenrothes seat.
“Mr Roy has already been in touch directly with myself and I’ve explained that to him,” said Mr Buchanan.
“The name was introduced as part of a review in 2004 and at that time the majority of people who were consulted were perfectly happy with it.
“Reviewing a constituency is a process set out by legislation and takes a good deal of time and resources. I don’t think a name change would be considered a good enough reason to undertake a review.”
