Cultural strategy being drawn up for city

DUNDEE IS preparing to launch a five-year master plan to build on the success of the city’s cultural regeneration.

The plan aims to make Dundee a city that is “proud of, and known for, its creativity, ambition, achievement, fairness and cultural richness.”

It will go before the leisure and arts committee for approval on Wednesday.

The master plan has been devised through extensive discussions with agencies and organisations.

The cultural strategy is based on a study carried out by Creative Services (Scotland) Limited on behalf of a steering group that was established by the Dundee Partnership.

The strategy makes nine commitments, including cultivating sustainable cultural ambition in Dundee’s communities, ensuring the city makes a significant contribution to the national stage and enhancing its international profile.

Other commitments include turning local talent into jobs, developing a citywide infrastructure for creativity, maximising the use of Dundee’s cultural resources and ensuring all children have a culturally rich and creative educ-ation.

Ensuring the public realm is a space for culture and creativity and that the city’s heritage has a role in its future are among the other aims set out in the 40-page documents.

Among the objectives in the action plan are promoting the role of cultural ambassadors for the city at international festivals and conferences.

Well-known Dundonians such as Brian Cox, the BBC’s top political commentator Andrew Marr, who attended Dundee High School, and adopted Dundonian Lorraine Kelly will be “invited to extend the goodwill and good news about the city publicly.”

Other objectives include growing the network of community venues for cultural activities in Dundee; establishing a programme of civic-led events that will engage international partnerships; engage universities in a city-wide plan for the retention of creative graduates within the city and develop the proposed civic space at the waterfront as a high quality focal point for the city centre.
