Fascinating accounts of mill life

DOCUMENTS OFFERING a new insight into the history of the Stanley Mills cotton-weaving complex have been gifted to Historic Scotland.

The Victorian accounts book details the income and expenditure of the business and estate that Colonel Frank Stewart Sandeman purchased in 1876.

Included in the ledger is information showing that the weekly wage bill between 1876 and 1880 was between £107 and £172.

It wasn’t all about spending, however, as milk sales from the family farm brought in about £6 a week.

The book was gifted to Historic Scotland, which runs a visitor centre at Stanley Mills, by relatives of Phyllis Culbert, who died this year.

Mrs Culbert’s family had worked at the mills for generations.

In addition to the book there were also several glass plate negatives, including ones showing the building of the housing for a later turbine in 1921.

Historic Scotland collections registrar, Hugh Morrison, said, “We are very grateful to Mrs Culbert’s son Ian for this very generous donation.”
