SUNSHINE BROKE over the pristine fairways of the St Andrews Old Course yesterday afternoon as professional golfers, amateurs and celebrities practised on the eve of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The four-day tournament starts today and incorporates two competitions—an individual tournament for the world’s top professional golfers and a team event in which they play with amateurs.
Among the well-known faces at St Andrews yesterday were Ronan Keating of Boyzone and former footballers Johann Cruyff and Jamie Redknapp.
Among the professionals England’s Luke Donald and Nick Dougherty were at the famous links course as was two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington, who praised the tournament for allowing spectators to watch for free over three of the four days.
“I think it’s great that golf fans can watch their favourite players and all the big name amateurs that they usually just see on TV out there on the golf course for free,” said the 2008 US PGA champion.
“I love playing in Scotland and I think the fans are incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, so I think it’s great that they can benefit from this terrific opportunity.”
One or two familiar faces were also spotted in Carnoustie yesterday as the town’s famous course readied itself for the arrival of the Dunhill championship.
Spanish star Miguel Angel Jimenez, who starts his tournament on the 10th at Carnoustie at 10.17am today, was out early getting a feel for the fairways.
Another recognisable figure was Paul Lawrie, who always looks delighted when he returns to the scene of his famous 1999 Open victory.
l Fireworks are set to light up the night sky around St Andrews on Saturday ahead of the final day’s play in the championship.
The West Sands event will start at 8.25pm—all are invited to the show, which will be synchronised to music.
For the best view organisers recommend heading for the Links Road—near the 17th hole—or the track by the Old Course Hotel.
