Strong winds cause disruption

The A930 between Muirdrum and Carnoustie was blocked by a tree which had been blown over.

TAYSIDE WAS battered by blustery conditions on Saturday, with the Tay road bridge forced to close to all but cars and single deck buses for a spell.

The central walkway for pedestrians and cyclists was also shut off as gusts of up to 77mph were recorded.

Several sporting events fell foul to the wind, with play abandoned on all three courses for Saturday’s Dunhill Links Championship.

Football games involving Angus teams Arbroath, Brechin and Montrose were also postponed.

Residents in Dryburgh, Dundee, were given a shock when a trampoline blew from a garden in Ettrick Crescent on to the street.

Neighbour Kevin Dunsmuir said, “It blew right across the garden and into the middle of the road.

“It’s quite a big one as well—about eight or 10 feet.”

The emergency services were also called to deal with a number of trees that had been blown over.

Cars parked in Aboyne Avenue and Balbeggie Street in Dundee were damaged when trees fell on top of them and there were also problems when one of the main access roads into Carnoustie was blocked by a fallen tree trunk.

Trees were also reported to have been blown over in Montrose and Brechin— although there were no reports of injuries.

A police spokesman said there were no problems reported after the high winds had calmed down by Saturday evening.
